HFJ Announces Endorsement of Elena Kagan, Urges Prompt Senate Confirmation

Jul 29, 2010

Despite Senate hearings that left out immigration, racial profiling and other issues important to Latinos, Hispanics for a Fair Judiciary confident Kagan will be voice for justice and equality

WASHINGTON, DC – Hispanics for a Fair Judiciary (HFJ) today endorsed Solicitor General Elena Kagan’s nomination to the Supreme Court and urged the Senate to confirm her well in advance of the court’s October session.

During Senate Judiciary Committee hearings on her nomination, General Kagan provided a great deal of insight into her legal background, experience and deference to precedent, but there was little discussion on civil rights and immigration issues and none about the Latino community. Despite this disappointment, HFJ expressed confidence that Kagan would be a voice for equality due to her reverence for former Justice Thurgood Marshall and career-long commitment to civil rights.

HFJ also urged the Senate to promptly confirm General Kagan. By confirming Kagan before the Senate recesses for August, the new justice would have time to prepare for the Supreme Court’s fast-approaching October session.

Last week, HFJ held its fourth and final discussion forum on the Kagan nomination. The series, “Justice Matters: The Elena Kagan Nomination and the Impact of the Supreme Court on the Latino Community,” comprised events in Washington, D.C., the NALEO Annual Conference in Denver, the NCLR Annual Conference in San Antonio, and the LULAC Annual Convention in Albuquerque.
